Kanae moved from Japan to the UK when she was 19 to study Textile Design. After being an assistant to London based designers Donna Wilson and Lizzie Finn, she started a career as a freelance embroidery artist working for clients such as Nike, creating artwork for promotions and advertisement.
Since 2011 she has been continuing her embroidery work back in Japan, and has had several solo exhibitions in galleries and shops. She has created embroidery designs for Japanese fashion label ‘mother’ and in 2013 a stop motion animation of her embroidery work was produced for an educational TV programme, NHK Japan.
Her inspiration comes from not only flowers and animals but also horror films, mystery novels, and alternative rock music. She would like to use traditional embroidery skills to create something modern and contemporary. Her dream is to create work for a film by Michel Gondry.
